Explore the Treasure Island Museum:

Yerba Buena Island is both a window to San Francisco’s past and a portal to its future. The place that brings this most vividly to life is the Treasure Island Museum, where lectures and exhibits give us a glimpse of the city’s long and rich history and the Island’s place in it. The building itself encapsulates the Island’s role in defining the city; and, as a current pioneer in sustainable living, it’s exemplified by the Yerba Buena Island Homes and their attunement with the joy of city life and the inexhaustible richness of northern California nature.

The online exhibit Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Golden Gate International Exhibition gives a sense of what the island looked like at the time of the fair via the medium through which visitors shared their experience with family and friends. A rich visual map of the island at the time, the exhibit is also a fascinating exploration of early postcards. The cards themselves capture the spirit of that time with their distinctive photographs and graphic design. Many of the photographs were taken by Gabriel Moulin and his studio, which was located on the island so that prints could be developed on-site, creating a thorough visual record. Moulin took shots of the grounds of the fair with its intricate buildings, statues and pavilions, nighttime light displays that could be seen from a hundred miles away, the Food and Beverages Palace, and the Court of Reflections, which featured a reflecting pool and original sculpture. He also captured the feeling of promise and possibility that Yerba Buena Island still evokes today.

The renovation of the museum, housed in the old fairgrounds administration building, which was also at one time used as an airport, is set to include three theater spaces where visitors will be able to participate in community events and lectures, as well as two virtual reality experiences. The Pan Am Clipper experience will simulate a 1930s flight over the Island’s fairgrounds on an air path to Honolulu. The Bay Bridge Cable Walk Experience allows you to “walk” on the newly built bridge with the fairgrounds rounding out the throwback experience made possible by state-of-the-art technology.

Residents of the New San Francisco condos on Yerba Buena Island will find in this museum a source of local pride, a wealth of history to share through generations, and a cultural meeting place to connect with neighbors and the community at large. It’s yet another reason that life on Yerba Buena Island offers a unique feeling of connection with San Francisco as it once was and what it will become. KGO-TV (ABC): Mayor London Breed Visits Yerba Buena Island

San Francisco Mayor London Breed and city officials toured Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island on Wednesday where a transformational new neighborhood is taking shape on the site of the former naval base. Mayor Breed and city officials traveled across the Bay by ferry on what will be new regular service between the San Francisco Ferry Building and Treasure Island come January. The two decades in the making project on Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island has seen massive strides recently in housing, transportation and infrastructure development. “It’s amazing to see what this place is going to become for people and how this place is really going to begin to come alive again,” said Mayor Breed. The Treasure Island Ferry Terminal was just completed this summer. At build-out, Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island will boast stores, restaurants, offices and 300 acres of new parks.

Open Studios empowers local artists to showcase their work to the community, and it might just be the perfect place to pick up a piece for your own Yerba Buena Island home gallery. This annual event began more than 46 years ago when a group of Bay Area artists designated one weekend to open their galleries to the public. Today, this city-wide event draws more than 800 artists and over 100,000 visitors. From September 16 through October 17, serious collectors and the culturally curious can mingle with artists in their spaces (with proper health protocols in place).

Open Studios includes artists working in all mediums, including painting, printmaking, photography, installations, and wearable works. So, no matter what your tastes and style, there’s bound to be at least a few pieces that pique your interest over the course of the four weeks.

Some previous highlights included Afatasi The Artist’s surreal and colorful mixed media pieces, dreamy landscape paintings by Reza Alhosseini, and the classic-looking but quirky sculpture of Natasha Dikareva.

If a month of experiencing the art and creativity of the area isn’t enough for you, the festivities continue on. The work of 400 local artists will be displayed in the SFOS Exhibition at the SOMArts Cultural Center on October 21 through November 21.
